Why did you select Morgan Est?
Different challenge, committed to graduate development, promising opportunities.
What's the working atmosphere like?
There is a positive atmosphere with a good team spirit and an enjoyable environment.
How would you sum up your experience with Morgan Est in two words?
Continuous variety.
What do you do, day to day?
Whilst site based I have seen projects through from start to finish and have experienced procurement, letting subcontracts, pre-award meetings, site responsibilities such as inductions, daily management of subcontractors and liaison with suppliers. I attend design meetings with the client, giving consideration to design modifications and improvements. I have learnt the principles of site management in relation to health and safety, programming and budgets.
I am currently based in head office in the pre-contract team producing tender proposals. This is a different discipline to that of a site based engineer and has strengthened my competences in a different environment. My responsibilities are to produce budgets, input key milestones into the tender programmes and write technical documentation to support our bids on the MEICA elements of the schemes.
How do you see your career progressing?
I constantly take on more responsibilities and wish to progress to larger sites and in time to assume a role of M&E Project Management.
What advice would you give someone interested in construction?
There are significant elements of Mechanical and Electrical engineering within the construction industry about which I am constantly learning on both technical and commercial issues. It is a good route towards project management where responsibilities are many and varied and will include tendering, resolving contractual matters, programming, managing a team of project engineers through procurement, installation, testing and commissioning.
How easy was the transition from university to contracting?
I didn't find it too difficult as I knew it would be new and very different from previous work and University, so I was open minded.
What's the most satisfying aspect of your job?
Being given responsibility for certain areas of the works or project matters and knowing I am relied upon to provide important results and information to other members of the team.
What are the benefits of being part of a scheme such as the Morgan Est's Graduate Professional Development Scheme?
Support is available and training needs to date are being met with courses as well as on and off-site training. With the companies accreditation the Institutions such as the IMechE make visits where there is the opportunity to discuss your individual progress through the scheme.
What's the most enjoyable thing you've done so far?
As the only mechanical engineer on site I had the responsibility of procuring equipment which meant supporting sub-contractors and suppliers, providing all required information, chasing them when deadlines were being stretched and requirements not met. I arranged site visits to discuss sub-contractors scope in detail and managed their work once they were on site.
Throughout this stage of the project I had many new responsibilities and was required to develop quickly as a project engineer. I gained significant experience throughout this time and enjoyed having such an important role in the project.
