Morgan Est cuts a slice of success at Frankley Water Treatment Works
2 May 2008

Morgan Est project manager Anil Patel cuts into a tasty slice of birthday cake as he and his construction team celebrate a successful first year of improvements at Frankley Water Treatment Works. The Midlands-based infrastructure services provider is upgrading the Water Treatment Works as part of a two year, £31.5 million improvement scheme for Severn Trent Water.

Morgan Est project manager, Anil Patel, says: “One year into the project and in the face of a tight programme, complicated design and sensitive environmental issues, the hard work and commitment of the whole team means that the project remains on target to complete on time.”

He adds: “One of the major innovations that we implemented at Frankley during our first year was a 3D model of the works which gave non-engineering members of the team such as designers a much better understanding of its layout.  It meant they were able to literally walk through the complex and confined areas of the plant, giving them a much better understanding of what access and maintenance issues there might be.  This ultimately ensured any potential problems were dealt with at the design and not construction stage of the project which has benefitted Severn Trent Water by saving money as well as time.”

Frankley Treatment Works treats and supplies drinking water, which is piped from the Elan Valley in Wales to Birmingham and the surrounding area.  It serves 1.3 million households in Birmingham and when complete the site will treat 120 megalitres of water a day.

Morgan Est is due to complete the project by September 2009 in line with targets set out by The Water Services Regulation Authority (Ofwat), which require Severn Trent Water to safeguard the water supply.
