Cleo, a 100-tonne tunnel boring machine (TBM), has been successfully lowered into a shaft at Stoke Newington, North London by infrastructure specialist Morgan Est, on behalf of Thames Water.
The Lovat 131 TBM has been craned into position to enable Morgan Est to start work on a 4.5-kilometre long tunnel which will link Coppermills Water Treatment Works to the Ring Main. It will connect existing mains at Stoke Newington and Thames Water’s New River Head site in Islington.
Morgan Est is carrying out the project as part of the Thames Water Resilience Project which will help Thames Water improve the supply of drinking water in parts of London not currently served by the existing Ring Main, which opened in 1994.
Work is due to be completed in spring 2010.
